LAHDT550HV — Merrill Heavy-Duty Lightning Arrestor, for systems below 600V.
A lightning arrestor is wired into the well pump circuit to protect the motor and controls from voltage surges caused by a nearby lightning strike, load switching, or power line interference -- surges of 500 volts or more are directed safely to ground instead of through the pump motor and control panel. No arrestor can withstand a direct lightning strike or an extreme surge, but it's cheap protection against the far more common near-miss surges that quietly take out motor windings and control boards over time. This is Merrill's heavy-duty model, built with terminal lugs for a three-phase, below-600-volt electrical connection.
